For V6 models,Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the under-engine splash shield. Disconnect the battery cable (the larger cable) and the starter control cable (the smaller cable) from the starter solenoid terminals. Remove the driveplate/torque converter access cover. Remove the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the starter mounting bolts. V8 models: Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the air filter housing. Disconnect the battery cable (the larger cable) and the starter control cable (the smaller cable) from the starter solenoid terminals. Remove the starter mounting bolts (To detach the starter from a VS engine, remove these two bolts (use a long extension and a universal joint adapter on the socket to access these bolts)) and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the starter mounting bolts.

If voltage isn't present, investigate the starting system circuit using the wiring diagrams. If voltage is present but the starter doesn't operate, proceed to remove and bench test the starter. If the starter cranks slowly, assess the starter cranking voltage and current draw from the battery while cranking the engine. The battery voltage should not drop below 8.5 volts, and the current draw, measured with an inductive-type ammeter, should stay between 250 to 400 amps. If the starter receives voltage but fails to activate, remove and inspect the starter/solenoid assembly on a bench. Typically, a defective solenoid is the issue, but in rare cases, a seized engine could be the cause. Test the solenoid's operation by applying battery voltage to its S terminal and observing if the solenoid plunger, shift lever, and overrunning clutch extend and rotate the pinion drive. Depending on the results, you can diagnose whether the starter or solenoid is defective or if the starter/solenoid assembly is working correctly.
