Customer Questions & Answers

Q:
How to install a distributor for Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
For the four-cylinder engine, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, removing the coil wire from the distributor cap, and taking off the distributor cap. Make sure to note the rotor's position and create an alignment mark on the distributor to show its alignment with the block. Proceed by removing the distributor's hold-down clamp bolt and clamp, then take out the distributor from the engine. When reinstalling (without turning the crankshaft), insert the distributor into the engine in the same alignment as before and mesh the gears by turning the rotor if necessary. Secure the distributor in place with the hold-down clamp and bolt, replace the distributor cap, and reconnect the coil wire and battery cable. For the V6 engine, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine cover. On carbureted and TBI engines, also remove the air cleaner assembly. Unplug wiring harness connectors from the distributor base, remove the distributor cap, and scribe a mark on the distributor housing base to indicate the rotor's direction. Mark the distributor's position in relation to the engine before loosening the distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Remove the distributor. When reinstalling (without turning the crankshaft), place the rotor in its original location and lower the distributor into the engine, meshing the gears by turning the rotor if necessary. Ensure the distributor seats fully against the block by engaging the distributor shaft with the oil pump shaft. Align the distributor housing with the previously made marks, loosely install the hold-down clamp and bolt, reconnect the ignition wiring harness, install the distributor cap, reconnect the coil connector, and tighten the hold-down bolt. Finally, check the ignition timing.

Q:
How do you remove and install a distributor on Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the distributor, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. On HEI systems, remove the air cleaner assembly, and on EDI systems, remove the air intake plenum. Unplug the distributor's electrical connectors from the side of the base and remove the distributor cap. Mark the direction the rotor is pointing and also mark the position of the distributor body in relation to the engine block near the clamp. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp, and then take out the distributor from the engine. For installation without turning the crankshaft after distributor removal, position the rotor exactly as it was when the distributor was removed, and lower the distributor into the engine, ensuring proper gear meshing. Use a large socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation until the distributor drops down and align the marks on the distributor base and engine block. Install the hold-down clamp, reconnect the ignition wiring harness, and install the distributor cap. Reconnect the coil connector, tighten the hold-down bolt, and check the ignition timing. For installation with the crankshaft turned after distributor removal (HEI), remove the number one spark plug and turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the vibration damper aligns with the "0" on the engine timing indicator. Position the rotor between the number one and six spark plug terminals on the cap, and lower the distributor into the engine, ensuring proper gear meshing. Use a large socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt to turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation until the distributor seats flush against the block. Align the marks on the distributor base and engine block, install the hold-down clamp, and reconnect the ignition wiring harness. Install the distributor cap, reconnect the coil connector, tighten the hold-down bolt, and check the ignition timing. For EDI ignition installation, follow similar steps. Remove the number one spark plug and turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the balancer aligns with the "V" notch on the front cover. The distributor has a small number "6" molded into the housing; mark it with paint. Install the distributor into the engine, ensuring proper gear meshing, and check the rotor alignment with the "6" on the distributor housing. Tighten the hold-down bolt and install the camshaft sensor connector, cap, and wires as necessary. If the "SERVICE ENGINE" light comes on with trouble code P1345 after installation, the distributor may have been incorrectly installed, so repeat the procedure.
