- A:Remove the transmission. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, the pressure plate and clutch will also have to be removed. Jam a large screwdriver through the driveplate (on automatic transmission models) or in the starter ring gear (on manual transmission models) to keep the crankshaft from turning, then remove the mounting bolts. Hold the crankshaft to keep it from turning while you loosen/tighten the bolts. Since it's fairly heavy, support the flywheel as the last bolt is removed. Pull straight back on the flywheel/driveplate to detach it from the crankshaft. Installation is the reverse of removal. The driveplate must be mounted with the torque converter pads facing the transmission. Be sure to align the hole in the flywheel/driveplate with the dowel pin or untapped hole in the crankshaft. Use thread locking compound on the bolt threads and tighten them to the specified torque in a criss-cross pattern.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
