For these engines, start by removing the transmission, clutch assembly, and flywheel.

To replace the front crankshaft seal, remove the vibration damper and carefully pry the seal out of the cover. Clean the bore and position the new seal with the open end facing in. Drive the seal into the bore with a large socket and hammer. If the timing cover is removed, drive the seal out of the cover from the back side. Clean the bore and position the new seal in the bore with the open end facing in. Drive the seal into the bore with a large socket and hammer. For the rear crankshaft seal on 1990 and earlier 7.4 liter V8 engines, remove the oil pan and oil pump. Remove the rear main bearing cap and pry out the seal section in the cap. Tap the seal section in the block until it protrudes enough to grip and pull it out. Inspect the mating surfaces and seal grooves for defects. Install one seal section in the cap with the lip facing the front of the engine. Position the tool to protect the seal as it passes over the ridge in the block. Lubricate the seal lips and groove, then insert the seal into the block. Push the seal into place using the tool and remove the tool when both ends are flush with the block surface. Lubricate the cap seal lips and carefully position the bearing cap on the block. Install the bolts and tap the crankshaft to line up the main bearing and crankshaft thrust surfaces. Tighten the rear bearing cap bolts to the specified torque. Install the oil pump and oil pan. For V6 and small block V8 engines, remove the transmission, clutch assembly, and flywheel. Pry out the seal from the housing and clean the housing. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the new seal and press it into place using a hammer and wood blocks. Slide the seal over the crankshaft and bolt the housing to the block with a new gasket. For 1991 and later 7.4 liter V8 engines, remove the transmission, clutch components, and flywheel or driveplate. Pry out the old seal and clean the crankshaft and seal bore. Lubricate the new seal and install it using a special tool or tap it into place with a hammer and pipe or punch. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
