Q:
How do you remove the rear driveshaft? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rear driveshaft, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and then raising the vehicle, securely supporting it on jackstands. Place the transmission in Neutral with the parking brake off and make alignment marks on the driveshaft and differential flange to ensure proper reinstallation. Remove the rear universal joint bolts and straps (or companion flange bolts, nuts, and washers in the case of a 4WD vehicle). For two-piece driveshafts, remove the bolts, nuts, and washers from the center support bearing bracket and tape the bearing caps to the spider. Lower the rear of the driveshaft to separate it from the pinion flange, and slide the front of the driveshaft out of the transmission or transfer case (or separate the companion flange at the transfer case for 4WD vehicles). If the transmission or transfer case end has a splined yoke, cover it with a plastic bag to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For installation, remove the plastic bag, wipe the area clean, and inspect the oil seal. Slide the front of the driveshaft into the transmission or transfer case (or connect the companion flange), making sure alignment marks are in place. Remove the tape securing the bearing caps, install the straps and bolts, and tighten them to the specified torque. Finally, lower the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery cable. For the front driveshaft in 4WD models, raise the vehicle, remove the skid plate if applicable, and mark the relationship of the driveshaft to the front differential flange and the transfer case flange. Remove the bolts and straps from both flanges, push the rear half of the driveshaft forward to separate it from the transfer case flange, lower it, and separate it at the differential flange. For installation, attach the front end of the driveshaft to the front differential flange, install the straps and bolts finger-tight, and extend or compress the driveshaft as needed to attach the rear end to the transfer case flange. Tighten all bolts to the specified torque, reinstall the skid plate if removed, lower the vehicle, and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Q:
How can problems with the driveshaft be identified for the 1998 Chevrolet K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
Problems with the driveshaft are usually indicated by noise or vibration while driving, and a road test can help determine if the driveshaft is the issue.
