  Q: How do you remove and install a steering wheel?

  A: Disconnect the negative battery cable. On standard steering wheels, remove the 2 screws that secure the horn cover to the steering wheel. Then lift off the horn cover and disconnect the horn wire. On sport steering wheels, simply pry off the center cap. Using slip joint pliers, remove the steering wheel nut retainer. Be sure the steering wheel is unlocked, then remove the steering wheel nut. Mark the position of the steering wheel in relation to the steering shaft. Using a GM special tool or equivalent steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel. Under no circumstances should the end of the shaft be hammered on, as impact of this nature could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the column's rigidity. Remove the horn lead, complete with spring from the steering column. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure with the following note: when installing the steering wheel on the shaft be sure the alignment marks on the steering wheel and shaft match.
