Chevrolet Cobalt Fuel Filter Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove the fuel filter on Chevrolet Cobalt,HHR and Saturn ION with California PZEV emission systems?
A: The fuel filter is mounted under the vehicle, near the fuel tank. On 2007 and later models with California PZEV emission systems, the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module assembly in the fuel tank. For fuel pump module removal to access the filter, you need to relieve the fuel system pressure. If necessary, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Inspect the fittings at both ends of the filter to see if they're clean. If more than a light coating of dust is present, clean the fittings before proceeding. Disconnect the fuel lines at the fuel filter. After relieving the fuel system pressure, remove the filter mounting bolt, disconnect the metal collar-type quick-connect fitting, then disconnect the two plastic collar-type quick-connect fittings and remove the filter. Detach the lines, one at a time; be prepared for fuel spillage. After the lines are detached, check the fittings for damage and distortion. If they were damaged in any way during removal, new ones must be used when the lines are reattached to the new filter. Remove the fuel filter from the mounting clamp, while noting the direction the fuel filter is installed. Install the new filter in the same direction. When reconnecting the fuel lines, make sure the fittings attach securely-if they come off, a fire could result! Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
