  Q: How to replace a starter?

  A: Before replacing the starter, it is recommended to have the cranking system checked prior to removal; or after removal, take the starter to a parts store or automotive electrical repair shop to check operation. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the under-vehicle splash shield if necessary to access the starter. Remove the secondary air injection pump, if equipped. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter, including the starter electrical connector, Battery Cable and mounting bolt/nut. On 1.5L engines, remove the starter mounting bracket bolts and remove the bracket. On all engines, remove the starter mounting bolts or nuts if equipped and remove the starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to the specific torque.
