About Chevrolet K20

Chevrolet K20 is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by General Motors' brand Chevrolet from 1960 to 1988. The first Chevrolet K20 was introduced in 1960 model year as a four-wheel drive pickup truck. It also belongs to the long-lasting and famous Chevrolet C/K truck lineup. Compared to K10 and K30, Chevrolet K20 was a 3/4-ton rating truck according to load capacity. And it featured eight lug patterns on wheels. Basically, Chevrolet K and C series vans shared the same powertrain and configuration.
When Chevrolet K20 was first introduced in 1960, it was available in only two trim levels: base and custom. It has several engine options including 3.8 L 140 hp, 3.9 L 135 hp, 4.1 L 155 hp, 4.3 L 150 hp, 4.8 L 165 hp inline 4-cylinder engines and 4.6 L 185 hp, 5.3 L 220 hp V8 engines. And these engines were fitted along with a 3-speed synchromesh manual transmission, a 4-speed synchromesh manual transmission and a 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission.

Chevrolet K20 Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Just like any other members in the Chevrolet C/K truck lineup, Chevrolet K20 also displayed problems as accumulation of mileage. After all, it also is used for hauling or loading heavy items. Here are two most common problems happened to it:
First, poor fuel economy. According to Chevrolet K20 drivers, increased oil consumption is really a heavy burden for them. Not only the bad gas mileage, the engine performance suffered a lot such as decreased power and acceleration or in poor or rough idle. Sometimes, it would be difficult to start the engine and an odor of fuel could be smelt. If your Chevrolet K20 is also suffering from these or the Check Engine Light comes on, you can check the spark plug, air filter, oil filter, fuel pump, fuel injector, EGR valve gasket, EGR valve and EGR filter to confirm which one goes wrong.
Second, suspension and braking failure. On Chevrolet K20, owners could feel excessive vibration and hear rattling or squealing noises from underneath the vehicle while driving, swerving or nose diving when braking. The response became sluggish and tire wear became uneven. These symptoms could be attributed to a broken shock absorber or a bad sway bar bushing. As for braking failure on Chevrolet K20, you are suggested to check the ABS control module and the parking assist distance sensor.
While the best way to keep your Chevrolet K20 at the prime condition all the time is to maintain auto parts in it routinely. Seat belt should get replaced after every accident. Door lock is responsible for protecting your property from stealing and door handle is designed for entering or exiting from K20 more conveniently. These auto parts are both important and vulnerable; you should take good care of them.
