Q: How to install a distributor for Chevrolet Astro?
A: To begin with, the negative Battery Cable should be disconnected for a four-cylinder engine, the coil wire removed from the distributor cap and the distributor cap taken off. Remember to mark the position of the rotor and make an alignment mark on the distributor to mark its alignment with block. After that, remove hold-down clamp bolt and clamp of the distributor then take out the distributor from engine. When reinstalling (no directional change of crankshaft), place back into engine with distributor in same alignment as before and mesh gears by turning rotor if necessary. Distributor should be secured down with hold-down clamp and bolt; then put back on distributor cap before connecting coil wire and battery cable. On a V6 engine disconnect negative battery cable and remove engine cover. While carbureted and TBI engines require air cleaner assembly to also be removed. Unplug wiring harness connectors from distributor base, remove distributor cap and scribe a mark on distributors housing base indicating direction of rotor. Prior to loosening distributor hold-down clamp bolt, record position of this part in relation to engine block. Remove Distributor. When reinstalling (no directional change of crankshaft), lower this into engine making sure rotor is in its original location and if necessary by turning it mesh gears. By engaging oil pump shaft with it ensure that distributor seats fully against block. Align housing using earlier made marks then loosely install hold-down clamp bolt, reconnecting ignition wiring harness, installing distributor cap, reconnecting coil connector, tightening down on hold-down bolt. Finally check ignition timing.
