1989 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install Rear Axle Shaft on 1989 Pontiac Firebird?
A: On models equipped with a Borg-Warner rear axle assembly, service procedures should be limited to routine maintenance only, as repairs related to the differential assembly, axleshafts, axle bearings, and seals require special tools and expertise, necessitating a professional mechanic. To determine if your vehicle has a Borg-Warner rear axle, match the axle number stamped on the right side axle housing with the axle codes. Begin by raising the rear of the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands placed under the frame rails. Position an adjustable floor jack under the differential housing and raise it just enough to take up the weight without lifting the vehicle off the jackstands. Disconnect both shock absorbers, then remove the bolt attaching the left side of the track bar to the axle. Next, remove the brake line junction block bolt at the axle housing and disconnect the brake lines at the junction block. Lower the jack under the differential housing enough to remove the springs, then take off the rear wheels and brake drums. Remove the cover from the rear axle assembly and drain the lubricant into a container before taking out the axleshafts. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing clips, remove the brake backing plates, and disconnect the lower control arms from the axle housing. Also, disconnect the torque arm at the axle housing. Mark the driveshaft and companion flange, unbolt the driveshaft, and support it out of the way on a wire hanger. Finally, remove the rear axle assembly from under the vehicle, and for installation, reverse the removal procedure, ensuring to fill the differential with the recommended oil and bleed the brake system upon completion.
