1991 Chevrolet Metro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear axle shaft on 1991 Chevrolet Metro?
A: Raise the rear of the vehicle and remove the rear wheels. Take off the brake drums and remove the clip retaining the brake line to the axle. Separate the steel brake line from the flexible hose and plug the brake hose and line to prevent loss of brake fluid. Remove the nuts retaining the backing plates to the axle and then remove the backing plate from the axle. Remove the U-bolt nuts, U-bolts, and jounce stops. Finally, remove the rear axle. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to apply sealant between the axle-to-backing plate surface and bleed the brakes after installation.1987 (coil spring equipped): Block the front wheels and raise and support the rear of the vehicle by the body or frame. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums. Remove the clip retaining the brake lines to the trailing arms and disconnect the brake lines from the wheel cylinders, plugging them to prevent fluid leakage. Remove the brake lines from the brackets on the trailing arm. Remove the brake shoes and detach the parking brake cable from the shoe levers and backing plates. Remove the bolts retaining the backing plate to the axle and then remove the backing plates. Using a floor jack, support the center of the axle. Remove the bolt retaining the lateral rod-to-body and the lower retaining bolts for the shocks. Lower the floor jack to release the spring tension. Remove the trailing arm-to-body nuts and bolts and remove the axle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that the taper end of the spring faces down and meshes with the stepped part of the lower seat and the flat surface faces up.
