1991 Chevrolet Metro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How can the procedure for removing a fuel tank be made easier on 1991 Chevrolet Metro?
A: To work on a Geo Metro fuel system, first make sure your fuel tank is totally empty (you can use a drain plug when available or drive until you run out of fuel). Before starting, take out the fuel filler cap first to lower tank pressure, then release the fuel pressure. Take the battery's black cable off its negative terminal. When a drain plug comes with your fuel system, take it out to capture the fuel into an accepted container. Lift the car carefully on jackstands, and take off the rear seat cushions if they're there. Pull the fuel pump harness wire free and take out the grommet and harness through the floor pan. Before you start, separate fuel lines, vapor lines, and the tank neck and write which line connects to which spot on the tank to make assembly easier and stop fuel loss. Place jack stands under the fuel tank to lift it. Put wood between jack and tank to protect against damage, then take out the brackets and bolts that hold the tank. Detach the electrical wires and framework from the tank, but make sure you start by removing the fuel pump/fuel gauge sending unit wiring. You install things in the opposite order that you took them apart.
