1991 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace hard, split, or separated Engine Mount while keeping the engine/transmission in V8 engine on 1991 Pontiac Firebird?
A: If the rubber mounts are hard, split or separated from the metal backing, they will need to be replaced and the operation can be done on the vehicle with the engine/transmission still in situ. On front-mounted engines there exist throughbolt and nut that should be detached, the engine can then be lifted slightly using a hoist or a jack that has a wood block placed on the oil pan. After that, take off the mount and frame bracket assembly out of the crossmember, put the new mount in place, fit the throughbolt and nut, and properly tighten all the bolts to the incidated torque. For the rear mount, remove the crossmember-to-mount bolts, and then jack up the transmission just enough that the bolts can be slid out. After that, take off the mount to transmission bolts then the mount. Place the new mount and lower the trans, align the crossmember-to-mount bolts before final tightening of all the bolts to torque.
