1991 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect and remove the exhaust manifold in V6 engine on 1991 Pontiac Firebird?
A: Remove the ground cable from the car battery, well, lift the car up and place jackstands securely under it. Both exhaust pipe and manifold are connected by bolts and hence the bolts need to be loosened in order to detach the joint. After that, take off the jackstands and then lower the vehicle and then unplug the oxygen sensor pigtail electrical connector and then air management hose at the check valve. Remove the individual wires that connect from the spark plugs and lay them aside as to be easier to reconnect in the future. Take out all the exhaust manifold bolts and you are now ready to separate the manifold from the engine. For the left side just as the same do the disconnection of the negative battery terminal and then lift the vehicle using jackstands. Take out the bolts which hold the exhaust pipe to the manifold and then break the pipe loose. Take out the four bolts and the nut that is at the rear part of the manifold; after that, lower the car after having removed the jack stands. Remove the air cleaner assembly with all the hoses if possible for labelling, and disconnect the hoses to the air management valve. If any of the wires are likely to hinder the removal of manifold, it should be tagged appropriately. If required, then the power steering pump bracket has to be detached from the cylinder head; for this, the pump adjusting bracket bolt is to be undone and the pump drivebelt has to be freed. I had the steering pump assembly out of the way and pulled the rest of the manifold bolts and separated the manifold and heat shield off the engine. In installation also make sure to clean the mating surfaces on the manifold and cylinder head before reversing the above mentioned steps.
