1991 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to disconnect the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the fuel tank on 1991 Pontiac Firebird?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, ensuring to disable the anti-theft feature on models equipped with a Delco Loe II audio system. Remove the fuel tank. The fuel pump/sending unit assembly is located inside the fuel tank, secured by a cam lock ring mechanism with an inner ring featuring three locking cams and an outer ring with three tangs, the latter being welded to the tank and immovable. To unlock the assembly, turn the inner ring counterclockwise until the locking cams are free of the tangs; a hammer and brass punch can be used to tap the lock-ring counterclockwise if necessary, but avoid using a steel punch to prevent sparks that could cause an explosion. Carefully lift the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank, taking care not to damage the delicate fuel level float and sending unit. Inspect the rubber gasket around the tank opening and replace it if it is dried, cracked, or deteriorated. Remove and inspect the strainer on the lower end of the fuel pump, replacing it if dirty. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump and remove the pump from the sending unit by pushing it up into the rubber coupler and sliding it away from the bottom support, ensuring not to damage the rubber insulator. Inspect the rubber coupler and sound insulator, replacing them if necessary, and then reassemble the fuel pump onto the sending unit assembly. Insert the fuel pump/sending unit assembly back into the fuel tank and turn the inner lock ring clockwise until the locking cams are fully engaged by the retaining tangs, pushing down on the inner lock ring if a new O-ring type rubber gasket has been installed. Finally, install the fuel tank.
