1991 Pontiac Firebird Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Cover in V6 engine on 1991 Pontiac Firebird?
A: If equipped with air-conditioning, remove the compressor from the mounting bracket and secure it aside, ensuring not to disconnect any of the air-conditioning system hoses without having the system depressurized by a technician. Remove the compressor mounting bracket, then remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the hoses and secure it aside, followed by the removal of the power steering mounting bracket. Next, remove the vibration damper, then the water pump. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts, and for 3.1L models, take out the oil pan. After that, remove the front cover mounting bolts and separate the cover from the engine. Clean all oil, dirt, and old gasket material from the sealing surfaces of the front cover and engine block, and replace the front cover oil seal. If equipped with a gasket, install a new one; if not, apply a continuous 3/32-inch bead of anaerobic sealant to both mating surfaces of the front cover, avoiding the cover-to-block mating surface where it engages the oil pan lip, and also apply sealant to the areas surrounding the coolant passages. Apply a 3/8-inch bead of RTV sealant to the cover-to-oil pan sealing surface. Position the front cover on the engine block and install the mounting bolts, tightening them to the specified torque. The remaining installation procedures follow the reverse order of removal.
