2001 Chevrolet Tracker Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the front shock absorber on 2001 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The shock absorbers are not serviceable and must be replaced as complete assemblies. To begin removal, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel. Place a floor jack under the lower control arm and raise it slightly, keeping the jack in this position throughout the procedure. For later models, remove the bolt and ABS speed sensor harness from the strut, then take off the clip securing the brake hose to the strut/shock absorber using pliers, ensuring not to twist the brake hose when reattaching the clip. Unscrew the three bolts to detach the strut tower bar and remove the three upper mount-to-strut tower retaining nuts. Next, remove the strut-to-spindle nuts and bolts, ensuring the ABS harness is detached before removing the strut-to-spindle bolts, which may require driving out with a hammer and punch. Carefully separate the strut/shock absorber assembly from the spindle and remove it from the vehicle, taking care not to overextend the driveaxle on 4WD models. For installation, guide the assembly into position in the wheel well, pushing the upper mount studs through the holes in the strut tower, then install and tighten the three nuts to the specified torque. Insert the spindle into the lower mounting flange of the strut/shock assembly, install the two bolts from the front side, and tighten the nuts to the specified torque. Finally, remove the jack from under the lower control arm and install the brake hose clip without twisting the brake hose, then install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
