2007 Pontiac G6 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What steps are necessary to replace the cylinder head bolts and reinstall the cylinder heads in 3.6L V6 engine on 2007 Pontiac G6?
A: One will have to buy a new set of 11 mm cylinder head bolts. Start with the fuel system pressure release, then take out the connection of the negative terminal of the battery as well as drain the cooling system. The parts are the lower intake manifold, valve covers, upper timing chains. Remove the wiring connection of the engine coolant temperature sensor and if the left cylinder head is to be removed then take out the dipstick tube. Remove the factory catalytic converters off the exhaust manifolds because the heads will be installed with exhaust manifolds intact. Undertighten the head bolts, starting from the outer in an unspecified pattern to approximately one-fourth of a turn before the bolts can be unscrewed manually, and observe that some bolts are longer than others and of different sizes so that they can be fitted properly. Remove the heads from the engine block gently and place wooden blocks on the heads in order to avoid damages when tightening bolts; where there is little resistance encountered use pry bar in an intake port. When reinstalling the heads the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and block should be totally clean, resorting to gasket removal solvents and scraper for gasket to remove carbon deposits and old gasket material then applying a cloth soaked in brake system cleaner. Do not over scrape the aluminum cylinder heads to ensure that the sealing surfaces are not damaged and it should be guaranteed that there is no presence of oil on the surfaces to cause sealing problems. Ball bearing block and head mating surfaces should also be examined for nicks or scratches-the minor surface damage that should be smoothed out with emery cloth; more significant mating surface damage may require machining. There are threads in the head bolt holes; use a tap or spray brake cleaner and blow off with compressed air to clear any dirt. Lay the new gaskets on the dowels of the block and put the heads on the block in a manner that does not shift the position of the gaskets. Apply a medium strength thread sealer on the threads of the M8 head bolts flat washers, head nuts , and the threads of the new M11 head bolts flat washers, head nuts. Tighten two threads past the gasket by finger. As per sequence described above, turn the bolts to achieve required torque and angle of rotation. Fasten the 8 mm bolts on to the proper torque and turning angle and then proceed as the steps have been removed. And lastly pour coolant, replace the engine oil and the filter, run the engine switch off, inspect for any normal operation and any signs of leakage of the coolant and oil.
