Buick Rainier Ignition Lock Cylinder

The Buick Rainier Ignition Lock Cylinder ensures the driver's direct control over the engine, as it only permits the flow of electricity to the ignition and components after the correct key is inserted. Attached to the steering column, this Ignition Lock Cylinder connects mechanically to an ignition switch directing battery current to START, ON, ACC, or LOCK positions, allowing the engine to be fired up, audio and windows to be operated, or the whole system shut off, while simultaneously locking the steering wheel and gearshift. The first years of production of the early Buick and Rainier models applied a simple key-turn Ignition Lock Cylinder that could be forced with basic tools. Later models applied transponder-coded keys, so even if thieves defeat the metal tumblers, the computer blocks fuel and spark until the right code is read. Both styles share the same turning mechanism, but the coding in the design employs an electronic handshake that helps greatly reduce theft in Buick SUVs. Excessive wear can cause a faulty Ignition Lock Cylinder to jam or lose contact, making it hard for the vehicle to start, stalling the engine, or killing the components. Get your Rainier checked out before you find it unexpectedly silent at a green light due to Ignition Lock Cylinder failure.

Buick Rainier Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on Buick Rainier?
    A:
To remove the ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, remove the steering column covers and the Electronic Park Lock switch. Next, install the key into the lock and rotate it clockwise to the Run position. Push in the retainer pin and pull the key and the ignition lock cylinder from the ignition switch/lock cylinder housing. If equipped, slide the theft deterrent control module off the ignition lock cylinder barrel. Disconnect the multi-terminal connector and the two single wire connectors. If the ignition lock cylinder has not been removed, remove it now. Insert a special forked tool into the release tabs on the ignition switch/ignition lock cylinder housing to release the ignition switch. Take note of the gear positions on the new ignition switch and ensure they are correctly aligned with the ignition lock cylinder housing. For installation, use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder gear counterclockwise until it hits the stop, which is the ignition switch install position. Insert the ignition switch into the ignition lock cylinder housing, ensuring the tabs align with the slots in the housing. Use a screwdriver to rotate the lock cylinder gear clockwise until it reaches the Start position, then release it into the Run position. Install the ignition lock cylinder and then proceed with the reverse of the removal steps for the remainder of the installation process.
