How to remove and install the steering column on Cadillac Escalade?

To take out the steering column, it is necessary to shift the car to the position with the wheels pointed forward, also, disconnect the leads from the battery and the air bag system should be disconnected. Some cars have a steering column lock pin or locking mechanism for securing the steering wheel in the straight position and others are to be strapped in. Both the steering column covers as well as the electrical connector to the multi-function switch must be disconnected. Remove the knee bolster and the steel plate which is behind it, and then remove the floor duct from the back of the knee bolster. Remove the shift cable from the column and shift lock actuator, the electrical connectors from the steering column and remove related wiring harness clips. Fasten the upper intermediate shaft to the steering shaft, next, undo the bolts on the shafts and take out the bolts that secures the end of the steering column before finally pulling out the steering column from the car. The general precautionary measure to follow includes: For installations, if a new column is being used, there should be a lock pin for the shipping of the column, this lock pin should be withdrawn once the position of the column is wanted. Position the steering column in the car and only secure the mounting nuts and bolts loosely, position the upper intermediate shaft to the steering shaft, secure and tighten the fasteners, followed by the column mounting nuts and bolts tightness. Perform the reinstallation procedure by reversing these procedures together with tuning then the shift cable if required.
