The timing system is detailed and should not be performed when there is any sort of doubt on the matter; major engine damage can occur if this procedure is ruined, so only professionals should undertake this task. Start by removing the black negative terminal on the battery, and flush out the coolant. Disconnect the drive belts, cooling tank, coolant manifold, crankshaft balancer, vacuum pump and shift the 'AC' compressor unit from its place but not parting the lines. Then remove the
Oil Pan and
Oil Pump and finally, take of the starter. Place the number one piston at TDC on compression stroke, remove electrical connectors to the camshaft position sensor and actuator magnet, also remove the sensor and harness bolts. Loosen and then remove all the timing chain cover bolts allowing you to separate the timing chain cover from the block, best practice will be to sort the timing cover bolts in accordance to their length and size. The chain for additional mass, tensioner, and sprocket have to be successfully unbolted and the timing mark has to be ideally synchronized to proceed further. After the timing marks are properly positioned, and the timing chain has been removed you should not rotate the camshaft or crankshaft until the timing chain is replaced. Take off the solenoid valve from the upper sprocket assembly, dispose of it and next to that unbolt the actuator from the camshaft, take off the actuator assembly with the chain inclusive. Check out the timing chain tensioner and sprockets for wears and or damages, if so indicted, loosen the bolt holding the sprocket onto the crankshaft. During timing chain installation, replace the chains in sets with the camshaft and crankshafts sprockets, also, make sure that all the prior RTV gasket material is cleaned off. Slot the crankshaft sprocket with the Woodruff key and place it on the crankshaft; wind the new chain around the camshaft sprocket in a manner that the markings are in the right orientation. Ensure that the timing chain does not hang outside the engine block, install the new camshaft position actuator valve and tighten that bolt, apply force on the timing chain tensioner to compress it and then fit it. Turning the crankshaft with your fingers, two times clockwise and anti-clockwise, you should feel some kind of tightness, then install the oil pump. Before tightening the bolts, clean all the sealing surfaces of the timing chain cover, apply some RTV sealant and finally fit the cover loosely before you torque the bolts according to the proper sequences. Replace with a new crankshaft oil seal and carry out the operation in a sequence which is opposite to the one that has been illustrated. Last but not least, top up the cooling system and engine oil as well as the engine oil filter, start the engine and look fer leakages.
