For four-cylinder engines, begin by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, ensuring that on models with the Delco Loc II audio system, the lockout feature is disabled before disconnecting the battery. Next, remove the air filter box element. For 2.3L engines and 1992 and later 2.2L engines, unclamp the air duct from the air filter box, remove the crankcase vent tube, take out the air filter box mounting bolts, and lift the air filter box from the vehicle. For 1990 and 1991 2.2L engines, unclamp the air intake from the air duct, unbolt the air duct from the battery tray, and lift the air filter box from the vehicle. For 1987 through 1989 2.0L engines, unclamp the air duct from the
Throttle Body and air filter box, unbolt the air filter box from the radiator support, and then remove the air filter box from the vehicle. Installation follows the reverse order of removal. For V6 engines, detach the cable from the negative terminal and then the positive terminal of the battery, followed by removing the battery from the vehicle, again ensuring the lockout feature is off for models with the Delco Loc II audio system. Unplug the electrical connector and unclamp the air duct from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, then remove the air filter box bracket bolt. After that, remove the air filter box element and the lower air filter box-to-bracket bolt before taking out the air filter box. Installation is the reverse of removal.
