Chevrolet Beretta Camshaft Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to install a camshaft?
A: This procedure applies only to 2.0/2.2 liter four-cylinder and V6 engines. Moly-base grease or engine assembly lube should be used to lubricate the camshaft bearing journals and cam lobes; in addition, ensure that the bearing journals as well as the lobes have been prelubed before installing the camshaft. When putting the camshaft into the engine, support it near the block, making sure not to scrape or nick the bearings while doing so. The thrust plate is installed and bolts tightened on four-cylinder engines. Camshaft, lifters, timing chain and sprockets installation is finally done.
  • Q: How to replace the camshaft and Lash Adjuster in a Chevrolet Beretta?
A: To do this, the operator requires special tools. Removing the Timing Chain and sprockets entail unplugging the negative battery cable. The subsequent steps are taking out the timing chain housing-to-camshaft housing bolts, removing the ignition coil and module assembly, and disconnecting an Idle speed power steering pressure switch. The power steering pump as well as brackets need to be removed first then followed by removal of power steering pump drive pulley. Remove oil/air separator as an assembly with hoses attached, then remove fuel rail from cylinder head. At rear for exhaust, unplug oil pressure sending unit wire and unbolt engine lifting bracket. Both intake and exhaust: Loosen camshaft housing-to-cylinder head bolts in 1/4-turn increments while reversing tightening sequence. Remove housing from cylinder head and then remove camshaft cover as well as housing bolts. Very gently lift the camshaft out of the housing. Remove old gasket material, clean surfaces. Pull oil seal from intake camshaft. Remove lash adjusters keeping them organized. Inspect lash adjusters visually; measure bore, check lash adjuster diameters anyway. When installing new gasket, position camshaft housing with lubricated components in it followed by installation of lash adjusters and lubricating lip on oil seal (intake cam). Install cam shaft up in its bearing with dowel pin UP in front sprocket hole on gear side of engine block! Apply pipe sealant to bolt threads, install new housing seals, install cam shaft cover with bolts making sure that oil seal depth does not exceed 0.020 inches from outside face of end cap or bearing holder flange that provides a leak-free joint between two components; tighten these down in order specified by manufacturer's instructions until tightened properly according specifications listed under "tightening torque" section of their website; make certain there is no excess around edges which could cause damage during handling process or while being installed onto other parts such as valve cover gasket's edge. Power steering pump pulley must be installed again along with all other parts previously removed before this can happen, so don't forget about changing oil filter first too! If you are installing new lash adjusters or are experiencing lash adjuster noise, follow a bleed procedure to warm up the engine and increase the engine speed until the noise goes away. Road-test vehicle and check for leaks.
  • Q: How to check camshaft and Bearing?
A: The procedure applies to 2.0/2.2 liter four-cylinder overhead valve engines and all V6 engines, but removing the engine from the vehicle and mounting it on a stand will be necessary because the space is not enough for removing the camshaft. To check camshaft lobe lift with the cylinder head installed, first remove the rocker arm cover(s) and rotate number one piston to TDC on compression stroke. Loosen rocker arm nuts, swing aside rocker arms, and then attach a dial indicator to engine with its plunger positioned on top of the first rocker arm just over the pushrod. Zero out the dial indicator before gently rotating crankshaft clockwise until needle stops and reverses indicating maximum cam lobe lift. Write down this value and do the same for all other valves while making sure that each piston is at TDC when on compression stroke. If camshaft lobe lift is less than specified, it shows that they are worn out so they need to be replaced with new ones. An alternative method when cylinder head(s) have been removed involves measuring at its highest point while taking a reference point through its base circle that should be perpendicular to the lobe using micrometer.Camshaft removal requires among other things removal of timing chain and sprockets, lifters, pushrods as well as oil pump drive stick.Follow these steps to remove your camshafts: Remove timing chain as well as sprockets; remove lifters ,pushrods and oil pump drive; use long bolts for supporting cams during removal ensuring that you take care of damaging bearings near block.Inspect camshaft surface against wear condition of bearing journals or lobes how about oil pump drive and gears? Provided components are in good shape and specifications have measured up, reuse is possible.Nevertheless, inspect inside diameter of bearing journals of block's bearings for wear or damage or determine bearing oil clearance which is an essential criterion for estimating excessive clearance that requires new bearings.Bearing tools for camshaft bearing replace or automotive machine shop is needed.
