Q: What is the importance of the serpentine drive belt in the overall operation of the engine and its components?
A: At the front of the engine is a single, serpentine drive belt which has a significant role in running the engine. The belt, due to its function and composition, is prone to wear and should therefore be inspected regularly. The alternator, power steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor are driven by this serpentine belt. With the engine off, open the hood and use your fingers (and a flashlight, if necessary) to move along the belt, checking for cracks and separation of the belt plies. Check for fraying and glazing that gives a shiny appearance on the belt. To check both sides of this belt, you will have to twist it over to inspect underneath it. Look at the ribs on the underside of the belt. They should all be equal in depth with no uneven surfaces anywhere. The tension of the belt is visually checked. Locate your belt tensioner at front end of engine under AC compressor on right(passenger) side then locate tensioner operating marks located on side of tensioner. If indicator mark is outside of operating range replace belt . To replace a broken drive chain first disconnect cable from battery's negative terminal. For models equipped with Delco Loc II audio system make sure lockout feature is turned "OFF" before performing any procedure requiring battery disconnection.Rotate (clockwise on 2.0/2.2-liter four-cylinder engines; counterclockwise on V6 and 2.3-liter Quad-4 engines) tensioner to release tension from drive belts.Tensioner will swing down once you release tension from it.Remove auxiliary components belts if any carefully releasing tensioner.Note: On 1994 and later V6 models remove engine mount attached to front of engine before completely removing timing chain.Support engine with jack placed under oil pan (be sure to place wood block between jack head & oil pan), raise slightly, & remove engine mount.Place new chain around various pulleys rotating tensioner again to allow chain to be installed, then release tension from chain. Note: Most models have a drive belt routing decal on the belt guard to help during drive belt installation.
