The lock cylinder is located on the upper right-hand side of the steering column. For models built in 1970, it can be removed in any position from 'ACCESSORY' to 'ON', but removal in 'LOCK' position is recommended. From 1971 onward, it should only be removed in the 'RUN' position to avoid damaging the warning buzzer switch. Begin by removing the steering wheel and directional signal switch, ensuring the switch is pushed rearwards enough to slip over the end of the shaft without pulling the harness out of the column. Use a thin blade screwdriver to break the housing flash loose while depressing the spring latch at the lower end of the lock cylinder, then withdraw the lock cylinder from the housing. The lock cylinder cannot be dismantled; a new one must be installed in the original cylinder sleeve after releasing the cylinder to sleeve staking. To assemble the new lock cylinder, insert the ignition key partway into the lock, place the wave washer and anti-theft ring onto the lower end, and ensure the plastic keeper in the sleeve protrudes. Align the lock bolt and anti-theft washer tab with the sleeve slot, push the lock cylinder fully onto the sleeve, insert the ignition key fully, and rotate the cylinder clockwise. Rotate the lock counterclockwise to 'LOCK', secure the lock assembly in a vise protected with wood or cloth, and install the adaptor ring onto the lower end of the cylinder. Tap the adaptor onto the cylinder until it reaches the bottom of the cylinder flats, projecting about an inch above the adaptor. Stake the lock cylinder over the adaptor ring in four positions just outboard of the four dimples. To install the new lock cylinder/sleeve assembly, hold the sleeve and rotate the lock clockwise against the stop, then insert the assembly into the housing, aligning the key on the cylinder sleeve with the housing keyway. Insert a 0.070 in diameter drill between the lock bezel and housing, rotate the cylinder counterclockwise while maintaining pressure until the drive section mates with the sector, then press in the lock cylinder until the snap-ring engages in the grooves. Finally, install the
Turn Signal Switch and steering wheel. For models from 1979 to 1981, the lock cylinder should also be removed in the 'RUN' position only, with similar steps for removal and installation, ensuring not to drop the lock retaining screw into the column.
