The parking brake shoes are located on both rear wheels, for these to be effective they have to be replaced at once but to avoid confusion on the parts being used, work on one brake assembly at a time. First off, remove the wheel lug nuts, lift the rear of the car, set it on jack stands and block the front wheels. Pull off parking brake and get rid of the
Brake Disc; if it does not releasing easily, ensure that the parking brake is released and hit slightly the hub surface of the wheel studs with a small hammer to break off the disc. The retaining spring can be rather obtrusive if one wants to remove it with the hub and bearing assembly left in place, it is recommended that the mechanism be dismantled for easier accessibility as shown in the following steps but it is not impossible to get round the spring without having to do this. Before one puts the disc back in the cartridge, check the drum segment in relation to the cracks, score marks, deep scratch or hard spots that are represented by discolored areas. If hard spots remain or are /if any other problems exist, the disc should be taken to an automotive machine shop for reconditioning. Were the drum portions to be worn out to an excessive extent then new discs may be required. Put the brake disc onto the hub flange and position it in a manner that the parking brake shoes come slightly in contact with the drum. Release the parking brake and then engage it a couple of times, while turning the disc, if there are rubbing sound from the shoes it indicates problem. Subsequently, put in the caliper bracket, rear brake pads and the caliper, in addition to the wheel and bolts making sure the wheel rotates properly. When the parking brake is engaged, the wheel should not rotate; if it does, with parking brake release the brake three times and try again, since it is self-adjusting. Last of all, adjust the posture of the car so that it is somewhat closer to the ground, then turn the lugs to the required degree of firmness and examine the brakes before proceeding to a road test. Following drive check the parking brake operation and set the parking brake with desired force for adequate performance.
