Chevrolet HHR A/C Compressor

The A/C Compressor on the Chevrolet HHR is the heart of the cabin-cooling loop. This important device squeezes low-pressure refrigerant into a high-pressure hot gas so the system can shed heat and then deliver crisp air to passengers. Within the compact unit, the engine-driven pump forces the gaseous refrigerant forward. The pressure in this unit turns it into a scorching vapor. Then, the condenser drops its temperature, followed by the evaporator, which sends chilled airflow back into the HHR. Under high load, dependable seals within the A/C Compressor hold gas and oil inside. The air conditioning A/C Compressor ensures temperature regulation even during peak summer traffic by maintaining this process. Over the years of production, the model would follow wider Chevrolet climate-control trends, first using systems charged with R12 and then later changing to environmentally safer R134a. The change of refrigerant marked the chief distinction in compressor styles. A/C Compressor specific oil and seal design may not interchange linearly due to the difference in styling of mineral oil and synthetic oil. The R12 unit uses mineral oil while R134a units use synthetic oil. When you choose the proper part, it means making sure factory refrigerant is compatible, pressure ratings and port fittings match your Chevrolet system, and ensuring the A/C Compressor continues to work smoothly on every warm-weather HHR drive.

Chevrolet HHR A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove an A/C Compressor on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
To remove the air conditioning system, start by discharging and recovering the system. Then, disconnect the battery cable and loosen the lug nuts on the right front wheel. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheel. Remove the inner fender splash shield and the drivebelt. For 2.0L supercharged models, drain the intercooler cooling system and remove the bolts securing the intercooler Water Pump. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch field coil and, if necessary, the high-pressure sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the compressor inlet and outlet lines, removing the old O-rings. Finally, remove the compressor by taking out the mounting bolts. To install a new compressor, follow the manufacturer's instructions for measuring and adding new oil. The clutch may need to be transferred from the original compressor. Before reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines, replace the manifold O-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Then, reverse the removal steps. Once installed, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by a professional.
