Chevrolet HHR Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the Brake Shoe on Chevrolet HHR?
A: To remove the rear brakes on 2009 and earlier models, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel. Take off the spring from the brake adjuster assembly, followed by the brake adjuster lever and adjuster. Use locking pliers to lift the end of the shoe retractor spring and remove the trailing shoe. Lower the shoe and lever connected to the parking brake lever, then lift the retractor spring and remove the leading shoe. Finally, remove the shoe retractor spring and twist off the trailing shoe/parking brake lever by depressing the tab at the cable end. For installation, clean the backing plate, lube the shoe contact points, and secure the center of the retractor spring in its mount. Install the new leading brake shoe, reconnect the parking brake cable end to the lever, and install the new trailing shoe/lever. Clean and lube the adjuster threads, reinstall it between the shoes, and install the adjuster lever and spring. Adjust the shoes by turning the star wheel while holding the lever up. Check the drum for any damage and install it on the axle flange. Pump the brake pedal, listen for any rubbing, and adjust the shoes if necessary. Finally, install the wheel, lower the vehicle, and check the brake operation before driving.
