For 2015 and earlier models, including the 2016 Malibu Limited, begin by squeezing the shift boot at the sides and using a trim tool or small, tape-wrapped flat-tipped screwdriver to separate the shift knob boot from the center console trim. Disconnect the shift lever knob electrical connector, then pull upwards on the knob while twisting to detach and remove the knob and boot assembly. Installation involves reversing the removal process, ensuring the shift knob is firmly pushed onto the shift lever and the boot snaps into the console. For 2016 and later models, except Malibu Limited, apply the parking brake and block the wheels to prevent rolling, then shift the transaxle shift lever into neutral. Use a trim tool or small, tape-wrapped flat-tipped screwdriver to separate the shift knob boot trim from the center console, starting at the rear and then the front. Once disengaged, pull the shift knob up firmly while twisting slightly, and if equipped, disconnect the parking brake switch connector and the shift knob connector. Remove the shift knob and shift panel together as a unit, then release the clip to separate the shift knob from the boot. Installation follows the reverse of the removal process.
