Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the steering wheel. Take out the radio, cigar lighter, and ashtray. Detach the fuse panel and hood opening cable from the instrument panel. Remove the cables from the heater control panel and take out the panel. Detach the defroster hoses. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the instrument panel and switches, as well as the speedometer cable from the speedometer. Disconnect any remaining wiring harness retainers connected to the instrument panel. Remove the instrument panel retaining screws and take the panel out of the vehicle. For models like Sidekick, X-90, Vitara, and Tracker, also disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and disable the airbag modules if equipped. Remove the lower steering column trim panel and steering column covers, then take out the turn signal/combination switch and instrument cluster. Remove the center trim bezel, radio, and heater/air conditioning control panel. Take out the glove compartment, ensuring to handle the passenger airbag module safely on later models. Remove the instrument panel retaining screws, and for older models, pry off screw covers and remove screws from various locations. For newer models, pry off speaker grilles and remove screws from the support beam and sides of the instrument panel. Pull the instrument panel out slightly, detach the defroster ducts, and disconnect any remaining electrical connectors or cables. Finally, remove the instrument panel from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal, ensuring to center the airbag coil when installing the combination switch/airbag coil on later models.
