When an overhaul is called for, as in cases of fluid leakage or sticky operations, consider all the possibilities before starting the process. New wheel cylinders are available, and thus this what would otherwise be a technically challenging task is, in fact, very simple. If the decision is made to rebuild the wheel cylinder then make sure that a rebuild kit is obtainable in advance. As with all wheel cylinders, replace both at the same time rather than just one because they must always be replaced in pairs. First, safely and securely jack up the rear of the vehilce and set it on jack stands and block the front wheels. Disengage the
Brake Shoe assembly and wash out all dirt and other material around the area of the wheel cylinder. Turn counter clockwise the bleeder screw and the brake line fitting next turn the two wheel cylinder bolts but do not disconnect the brake line. After that, remove the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate and clean it while placing it on the workbench, ensure to block the brake line to avoid release of the fluid. If the brake shoe linings are contaminated with brake fluid, fit new brake shoes to the car. In the overhaul procedure, it is necessary to dismantle cups, pistons, boots and the spring assembly from the wheel cylinder body. To clean a wheel cylinder you should use brake fluid, denatured alcohol or any brake system cleaner, but should not use any petroleum products. Blow compressed air in order to remove a large part of the fluid and clear the passages. Where the cylinder bore appears to be lightly corroded or there are score marks then the marks should be rubbed out with crocus cloth; if the marks cannot be removed or if the bore is scored then the cylinder should be replaced. Paint the new cups with brake fluid and fit the component parts of the wheel cylinder so that the cups' lips are inwards. For installation, just place the wheel cylinder in its proper location and also tighten the bolts to the standard Torque. Fasten the bleeder screw and the brake line securely by fitting it / and thereafter fit the brake shoe assembly. Lastly, bleed the brakes and test the brake functions before taking the vehicle for to operate it in traffic.
