In the case of CV joint boots, the mechanic should think through all possibilities before embarking on replacement since complete rebuilt CV boots are available for exchange. When you plan to dismantle a vehicle for spare parts, first ascertain the price of the spare and their availability. To start with, one must first take out the CV boot, which has to be fixed in a vise padded with rags so that it doesn't get damaged. Check the CV joint for radial play which should be more than the new part to show that there are worn parts, while checking to see that the operation is smooth when the CV joint is moved through its range of motion. If a boot is torn, then the joint should be dismantled and the components washed and examined for damage caused by the deterioration or the loss of the lubricant. In some models, the boot is covered with a protective cover which needs to be removed with diagonal cutting pliers. To remove the inner boot, the mounting clamps have to be cut off, but before that, it is necessary to note that while the smaller clamp can be easily cut with an oxyacetylene torch, the large clamp more likely will require the use of a hand held grinder. During reassembly, a conventional boot clamp should be used. Push the cme housing off the spider assembly, align the boot with the center and then take out the retaining ring. Should shift the spider down on the axleshaft with utmost caution to avoid displacing the bearings from where they should be. In order to avoid damaging the new boot when installing, the axleshaft splines should be taped before the moulded boot as well as the clamps are fitted. In outer CV joint boot replacement, it is necessary to detach the retaining clamps before pulling the CV joint off the shaft. Gently take out the ball bearings off the assembly and make sure that all of the parts are clean as possible while also assessing if they have been damaged. Now it is turned around and set into the cage, a snap-ring is put in and grease is put into the joint. Last, in place the boot on the CV boot, fit the CV joint assembly and then tighten the boot clamps.
