Just rebuilding a transfer case is a do-it-yourselfer nightmare, there are many small parts to deal with and one needs to make sure that clearances are accurate which often implies using select-fit centers and snap-rings. While any competent mechanic can at least take out and replace a transfer case, the overhaul is again best left to a transmission repair shop, as the time and expense almost always outweigh the value of the work, which again, can almost always be had cheaper through a rebuilt part via the dealer parts department or an auto parts store. A novice mechanic can rebuild a transfer case in case he or she has the proper special tools and is not hasty and does not miss something. Among the basic tools required for the overhaul there are internal and external snap-ring pliers to remove same-named rings from, a bearing puller, a slide hammer, a set of pin punches, a dial indicator, and possibly a hydraulic press, as well as big and stable working table and a vise or transmission stand. During disassembly, documentation is important where measures used to disassemble each part are recorded, position, and the securing mechanism in reassembling the part. Further, if one has at least some knowledge of what part of the transfer case is malfunctioning, this makes the analyzing and replacing of parts easier since some problems are known to stem from certain regions.
