Chevrolet Monte Carlo Catalytic Converter Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to diagnose and replace a malfunctioning catalytic converter?
A: A catalytic converter is a type of emission control device in an exhaust system which brings down some pollutants within the exhaust gas stream. Two kinds of converters exist; oxidation catalyst and reduction catalyst. Take it to a dealer or authorized emission inspection facility for diagnosis and repair if you suspect that the converter on your vehicle is not functioning properly. Inspect the converter for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage when servicing underbody components. Replace the converter if any damage is found. Place a vacuum gauge on an intake manifold vacuum source and note the vacuum reading at idle and when the throttle is quickly opened and closed in order to test for a restricted converter. When compared to idle reading, if the fourth reading is over one in-Hg lower than this, it may be indicative of restricted exhaust systems. After raising the vehicle disconnect the downstream Oxygen Sensor, nuts securing upper and rear flanges of catalyst/exhaust pipe assembly are removed, old flange gaskets are discarded together with that assembly new gasket and fasteners are used to install items.
