The GMC Sonoma Air Filter Box protects the engine by filtering incoming air to only let clean oxygen into the combustion chambers. Positioned between the grille and the intake manifold, the Air Filter Box seals a paper or synthetic filter element in a stout plastic housing that prevents dust, sand, and stray leaves stirred up on every drive. Air enters through a snorkel and swirls around in the Air Filter Box, then passes through the filter media where abrasive particles cannot scar pistons, rings, or cylinder walls. In early Sonoma models, the square two-piece Air Filter Box applied metal clips to hold the lid in place, while later GMC compact pickups changed to a rounded latch style Air Filter Box that uses molded tabs for faster access when changing the air filter. Installation is the reverse of removal.
