How to remove the automatic transmission shift levers on GMC Sonoma?

To remove the shift lever knob, turn the locknut clockwise to loosen it. Remove the knob and nut from the lever. If there is a floor console, remove it. Back off the lever nut and unscrew and remove the lever. To install the lever, install the nut without tightening it and install the lever and tighten the nut securely. Install the boot and retainer, if applicable, and tighten the screws. Finally, install the knob and locknut. Screw on the knob until it stops, then back it off to align the shift pattern.
