GMC Sonoma Heater Core Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do you remove the heater core in Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma?
A: To remove the heater core in a 1997 and earlier model, start by disconnecting the battery cable at the negative terminal and draining the cooling system. Then, disconnect the heater hoses at the engine side of the firewall and plug the open fittings. The heater core housing is located behind the dash, with the rear cover housing needing to be removed to access the heater core. Begin by removing the lower dash panels and the pivot bracket bolts under the dash. Lower the steering column and remove the bolt on the bottom right of the dash. Pry up the speaker grilles and defroster outlet grille to access hidden bolts. Once all fasteners are removed, pivot the dash rearward to access any cables that need to be disconnected. Disconnect the main electrical harness plug on the right side of the dash and remove the entire dashboard assembly. With the cover for the heater core exposed, remove the pencil brace and the screws holding the cover to the housing. Remove the straps and bracket, then carefully pull out the heater core. For a 1998 and later model, the entire heating/ventilation module must be removed from the firewall. Disconnect all electrical and vacuum connectors, remove the blower motor resistor, and reach through the resistor hole to remove the engine-side bolt securing the module. Inside the vehicle, remove the mounting nuts and bolts, then pull out the module. To remove the heater core, remove the screws on top of the module, remove the cover, and slide out the heater core. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to refill the cooling system and check for leaks and proper operation of the heating system.
