GMC Yukon Flywheel balances engine pulses, stores rotational energy, and provides the starter ring gear and clutch surface so the SUV can launch easily. This Flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft and spins in unison with the engine. Its inertia smooths out the bursts of combustion, so the power feels even. The starter motor will mesh with the Flywheel ring gear when the ignition key is rotated. This will turn the crank until the engine fires. As this happens, an overrunning clutch uncouples the motor. When the clutch disc grips the face of the Flywheel during driving, power is transmitted via the GMC Yukon transmission. However, repeated engagement of the clutch disc can create heat, warpage, and scoring. These problems tend to make replacement necessary sooner rather than later. In recent years, many Yukon models have featured a traditional solid disc, as well as a dual mass unit in which primary and secondary masses are sandwiched together with spring dampers to absorb vibration and quiet shifts. A solid unit can often be resurfaced, but most DMFs cannot be. Internal damper failure or ring gear damage generally means a new Flywheel will need to be installed in your GMC SUV.
