Q: How to Inspect and Maintain the EGR System, Including the EGR Valve and Thermal Vacuum Switch on Oldsmobile Cutlass?
A: The system is designed to minimize the NOx gases that come out of the exhaust, which are caused by high sulphur content and the temperature of combustion. In order to lower peak temperature and NOx formation, some of the exhaust gas is returned to the combustion cycle; this is done again using the passages within the intake manifold although most of the routing elements are hidden. Maintenance is mainly concerned with checking the vacuum hoses and the EGR valve. The only part included in the check that is known to wear out is the thermal vacuum switch. During idle or deceleration the EGR System does not work and is controlled by the Thermal Vacuum Switch that comes to function when the engine is warmed up. Rough idling, stalling and poor acceleration on light throttle are some of the problems that may be associated with this system. To check the EGR valve physically, the valve is the one located near to the intake manifold, check for the flow of the diaphragm and also the response of the engine when the diaphragm of the valve is forcefully depressed. Check vacuum gets to the EGR valve and use vacuum gauge to test the thermal vacuum switch. If required, EGR can be removed by disconnecting the vacuum hose, unscrewing the nuts/bolts, cleaning mounting surface, and putting new valve with gasket. For the thermal vacuum switch, remove the drain coolant, remove or disconnect the hoses, then remove the switch; apply thread sealer when reinstalling the switch then tighten to the standard torque.
