Oldsmobile Fuel Tank Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How is the fuel tank secured and what steps should be taken for servicing related to the fuel supply on Oldsmobile Cutlass?
A: Located forward of the frame rails and behind the rear axle is the fuel tank, which is held in place by two steel straps that are pivoted at one end and fastened by a bolt and nut at the other end. To perform any of the servitudes regarding the supply of fuel, it is necessary to disconnect the battery. Then unbolt the fuel gauge sending unit connector plug on top of the tank and whichever bolt you must use to get this then raise up the vehicle. Suck all the fuel in the tank into a clean container through the filler neck/ fuel feed line if there are no fuel drain plugs, being careful not to cause any sparks or flames. Pull fuel hose or Vapor return hose from the top of the tank, remove the gauge ground wire from under body and take off filler neck. Place another jack under one of the brackets at the base of the tank to support the load; use some wood to spread the load out and then unbolt the tank strap bolts and gradually let the tank down; ensure that all of the connections are loose. For installation, reverse the above removal process, make sure that all connections electrically are clean and properly connected along with all hoses are well tightened to the tank.
