- Q: How to remove and install the steering wheel on Pontiac Firebird?A:In the 1989 and earlier models first remove the horn pad by pressing downwards and then sliding it off the steering wheel. If removing the shroud is possible then take off the two screws holding the steering wheel shroud on the lower side then take off the shroud and horn contact lead. Subsequently it is then necessary to remove the retaining clip at the top of the steering wheel nut and then using a socket and a breaker bar undo the nut while noting where the steering shaft sits in relation to the wheel. Screw the anchor screws of a steering wheel puller through the threaded holes in the wheel; then with the help of a wrench screw the center bolt of the puller clockwise to divorce the wheel from the shaft. With the tool withdrawn, place the new steering wheel over the shaft, so that the flats engage, and tighten the nut to the appropriate stage in terms of torque, while the rest of the procedures should be done as they were in the process of removal. With the front wheels straight, 1990 and later models only, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the key. Safely turn off the airbag, next, remove the screws and nuts located at the rear of the steering wheel to free up the SIR module, preferably, with a no. 30 Torx. Before removing the steering wheel, it is essential to stow the airbag module in a place where it will not be in the way and be careful not to scratch your airbag coil with the anchor bolts for the puller.
