Pontiac G5 Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the heater core on Pontiac G5?
A: To start in 2006 and newer models, you must collect the refrigerant and remove the cable from the battery's negative terminal. Take out the liquids from the cooling system and pull the heater hoses away from their connections into the heater housing at the firewall. Take off the electrical plugs from both the HVAC controls box under the cabin and the blower resistor box, along with the airbag plug under the passenger side dash. Take out the steering wheel covering, the instrument panel itself, the knee bolster, the trim panels for the instrument panel, and the glove box. Uncover two key holder clips, one above the wheel and another by the radio, then take out both clips and the big instrument panel. First, remove the nuts holding the HVAC housing to both the cowl support beam and the firewall. Then, remove the mounting bolts holding up the cowl support beam, lower the brake pedal assembly along with the cowl support beam. Take out any fasteners holding the steering column up, then unsnap the electrical wires from the cowl support beam. Unbolt both sides of the beam to the vehicle body, removing the three bolts and nut connecting each side. Remove the console and the floor heating ducts. From this point, take out the 12 screws that keep the heater core cover in place on the firewall, set the cover downward, and slide it out. Gently pull the heater core out of its housing, tilting it at an angle that lets both coolant supply and exit pipes slide over the firewall and housing, placing towels underneath to catch any leaks. To put everything back together, reconnect the heater core's pipes at the firewall, start up the car, let it run until everything is working properly again, and top up the coolant.
