The basic task of the Pontiac Phoenix Release Bearing is to separate engine power from the gearbox the moment the clutch pedal is dropped in order to allow gear changes to occur without grinding. Housed on the clutch housing, the Release Bearing moves on a hollow shaft and strikes against the pressure plate spring, releasing the clutch disc. It then slides back when the pedal lifts to reconnect drive. Over the years, Pontiac fitted two actuation styles, both with the same basic design of the Release Bearing but different actuation styles. Early Phoenix manuals were based on a cable-operated fork, while later Phoenix models had a hydraulic circuit that sends fluid to the fork. The cable version can suffer from adjustment drifting, whereas the hydraulic layout maintains light pedal effort but can leak due to aging seals. No matter what style, the small Release Bearing will rattle when worn, send vibration through the pedal, make travel stiff, and cause tough shifting, all a warning that continued driving could produce harmful effects to other parts of the clutch in any Pontiac manual. Selecting a factory spec Release Bearing returns the familiar clutch feel.
