What is the purpose of the cabin air filter in the blower housing of Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe covered?

It is important to note that all models covered are equipped with a cabin air filter. For access to the cabin air filter, remove the glove box. Also, release the two clips on the filter door, open the door, and remove the filter. Installation is the reverse of removal.
