Saturn LS1 Coolant Temperature Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor on Saturn LS1?
A: For 4-cylinder models the first step is to make the engine off by turning the ignition key while on the other extreme, make the cooling system of the car below the level of the ECT sensor. That being the case, remove a seven pin electrical connector at the lower left corner on the cylinder head thermostat housing side which belongs to the ECT sensor. Utilize a deep socket, a six-inch extension and ratchet to unscrew then take out the ECT sensor. Before proceeding with the installation of the new sensor, cover the threads of the new part with Teflon tape to avoid leakage, afterward, using the process reversed from that of their removal; must ensure that the new sensor has been tightened to the appropriate torque. Last of all, refilling of the cooling system. For V6 models, turn the ignition key to 'OFF' then loosen the drain plug for the cooling system and make the system to go below the level of the ECT sensor. Disengage the ECT sensor of the connector on the left end of the engine, close to the cylinder heads, and the coolant crossover pipe, unscrew the sensor and take it off. The new ECT sensor threads should be wrapped with Teflon tape before installation; the process is the reverse of the removal process, and it should be tightened to the required torque. Some of them include: Replace the water pump, replace the thermostat, refill the cooling system upon completion.
