The fuel evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system consists of several components, including the canister, purge valve, vent valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, fuel tank, and vapor and purge lines. The system works by absorbing fuel vapors from the fuel tank and releasing them into the engine intake system during engine operation. The canister, filled with activated charcoal, absorbs and stores the vapors, which are then drawn into the intake manifold and combustion chamber through the purge hose by intake manifold vacuum. The PCM regulates the rate of vapor flow by controlling the duty cycle of the EVAP purge valve control solenoid. The system performs a self-diagnostic check when the engine is started cold, and the PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage to detect any leaks.
