When replacing an oxygen sensor, it is important to follow certain guidelines such as not removing the pigtail or electrical connector, keeping contaminants away from the sensor, not using cleaning solvents, and using anti-seize compound on the threads. The sensor can be replaced without raising the vehicle in the case of the pre-catalytic converter sensor, while the post-converter sensor requires raising the vehicle and securely placing it on jackstands. The electrical connector should be disconnected, and the sensor should be unscrewed using a suitable wrench or specialized oxygen sensor socket. After applying anti-seize compound, the sensor should be installed and tightened securely before reconnecting the electrical connector and lowering the vehicle.
