Q:
How to Troubleshoot and Replace the Brake Light Switch on Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana? Posted by Customer
A:
The brake light switch is located on the side of the brake pedal and activates the brake lights when the pedal is depressed. If the brake lights are not working, first check the fuse. If the fuse is good, check for voltage to the switch on the feed wire. If there is no voltage, repair the wire between the switch and the fuse box. If there is voltage, depress the brake pedal and check for voltage at the output wire terminal. If there is no voltage, replace the switch. If there is voltage, check for power at the brake light wires at the tail light housings. If there is no power, repair the circuit between the switch and the brake lights. If there is power, check for a bad ground using a jumper wire connected to a good ground. If the brake lights come on, repair the ground circuit. Keep in mind that the brake light bulbs could be burned out, but it is unlikely that all the bulbs would be burned out. To replace the switch, remove the left side under the dash panel and the heater/air conditioning duct if necessary. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch and remove the clip that retains the switch and pushrod to the pin on the brake pedal arm. Slip the brake light switch off the pin and install the new switch by reversing the removal procedure, ensuring that the retaining clip is properly installed.
