Q:
How to remove and install the thermostat housing and Thermostat for Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
A:
The thermostat housing is located on the left upper end of the cylinder head on the 2.5L four-cylinder engine and on the upper right end, between the cylinder heads, of the 2.BL V6 engine. The removal procedures are the same for both. Remove the thermostat housing cap by pushing down firmly and twisting it clockwise. Grasp the handle of the thermostat and gently pull it out of the housing. Wipe out the thermostat housing with a clean rag. Wipe off the thermostat O-ring and lubricate it with white grease. Check the thermostat to determine whether it must be replaced. Install the thermostat by pushing it down into the housing until it is properly seated. Install the thermostat housing cap. If you are replacing a damaged thermostat housing or a leaking thermostat housing gasket, repeat the previous steps, then disconnect the radiator hose from the housing. Note: This is the highest point in the cooling system, but some coolant will be spilled when removing the hose. It's a good idea to have some rags ready to mop up the spilled coolant. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor wire from the sensor. If you are replacing the gasket, leave the coolant temperature sensor attached to the thermostat housing. If you are replacing the thermostat housing, remove the coolant temperature sensor from the housing. Caution: Care must be taken when handling the coolant sensor. Damage to this sensor will affect the operation of the fuel injection system. Unbolt and remove the thermostat housing. Scrape all old gasket material from the mating surface of the cylinder head. Inspect the housing for damage on the outside and corrosion on the inside. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to both sides of the new gasket and position it on the thermostat housing flange. Install the thermostat housing and gasket and tighten the bolts securely. Wrap the threads of the coolant temperature sensor with Teflon tape, install it in the thermostat housing and tighten it securely. Reconnect the coolant temperature sensor wire. Top up the cooling system with fresh coolant. Install the thermostat and the thermostat housing pressure cap. Start the engine and check the new thermostat housing gasket for leaks.

Q:
How do you remove the thermostat for replacement or testing for the 1981 Oldsmobile Omega? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the thermostat, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, open the coolant drain valve on the lower right side of the radiator and drain the coolant into a suitable container. Remove the necessary components such as the vacuum modulator mounting bracket and bolts securing the water outlet to the thermostat housing. The thermostat will then be visible and can be removed from the engine.

Q:
How to remove and replace a thermostat for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
The thermostat is essentially a restriction valve actuated by a thermostatic element. It is mounted inside a housing on the engine and is designed to open and close at predetermined temperatures to allow coolant to warm up or cool the engine. To remove the thermostat for replacement or testing, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Open the coolant drain valve on the lower right side of the radiator and drain the coolant into a suitable container. For 1981 and earlier L4 and all V6 models, if the car is equipped with cruise control, remove the vacuum modulator mounting bracket from the thermostat housing. Remove the bolts that secure the water outlet to the thermostat housing. The thermostat will now be visible and can be removed from the engine. Note how the thermostat sits in the recess, as it must be replaced in this same position. Before installation, use a gasket scraper or putty knife to carefully remove all traces of the old gasket on the thermostat housing and the water outlet cover. Do not allow the gasket particles to drop down into the water passage. Place a i in bead of RTV or equivalent sealer around the sealing surface on the thermostat housing and place the thermostat into its recess. Immediately place the water outlet and a new gasket into position and torque-tighten the attaching bolts. Where applicable, install the vacuum modulator bracket onto the thermostat housing. Connect the negative battery cable and fill the radiator with the proper amount of antifreeze and water. With the radiator cap removed, start the engine and run it until the upper radiator hose becomes hot. When this hose is hot, the thermostat should be in the open position. At this point, add more coolant if necessary to reach the top of the filler neck. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows are aligned with the overflow hose. For 1982 and later L4 models, the thermostat and housing have been redesigned for simpler servicing. To replace the thermostat, first remove the thermostat housing cap. Then grasp the thermostat handle and pull it out. Replacement is completed by pushing the thermostat into the housing, making sure it is seated, and installing the cap.

Q:
How to test the operation of a thermostat for Buick Skylark,Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix? Posted by Customer
A:
The only way to test the operation of the thermostat is with the unit removed from the engine. In most cases if the thermostat is suspect it is more economical to merely buy a replacement thermostat as they are not very costly. To test, first remove the thermostat. Inspect the thermostat for excessive corrosion or damage. Replace the thermostat with a new one if either of these conditions is found. Place the thermostat in hot water 25 degrees above the temperature stamped on the thermostat. The water temperature should be approximately 220. When submerged in this water, which should be agitated thoroughly, the valve should be fully open. Now remove the thermostat using a piece of bent wire and place it in water which is 10 degrees below the temperature on the thermostat, or about 185 degrees. At this temperature the thermostat valve should close fully. Reinstall the thermostat if it checks out OK, if not purchase a new thermostat of the same temperature rating.
